Sealants

Many adult molars have deep groves and fissures that can trap bacteria and small food particles. If this buildup on the tooth is not properly removed, it can lead to the formation of a cavity. Sealants are a light coating of specialized material, not unlike the material we use in white fillings, that we use to help seal and protect these grooves.

Because sealants fill-in the grooves on your child’s teeth, they help to prevent the decay-forming bacteria from “sitting” in these deep grooves, and creating cavities.

Most children get their first set of “permanent” or adult molars at the age of 6 (hence the term “six year molars”) and the second set at around the age of 12. So it is often about this age that our pediatric dentist will discuss sealants with you and whether or not they are an appropriate treatment for your child.
